Living BLDR: How Discipline and Indulgence Forge the Ultimate Fitness Lifestyle
Staying in super good shape is easy…
Yup, it’s true, and you can have your cake and eat it too…. Once you’ve earned it. Once you have developed the lifestyle, discipline, and mindset of health and fitness, keeping a muscular and able body is second nature.
I have a vivid memory (circa 2008) of leafing through a Discover magazine in Charlie Company 1-5 Cav's main office, surrounded by some of the guys. An article about a man labeled "world's fittest" caught my attention. He wasn't just any amateur triathlete; his weekly regime was mind-blowing, involving around 40 miles of running, 15 miles of swimming, and 150 miles of biking, all this alongside a full-time job. What struck me most was his reasoning for such a grueling schedule – he did it "because it makes the beer and pizza taste better." That perspective deeply resonated with me, igniting a desire to achieve that fitness level while savoring life's pleasures.
My routine might not mirror his extreme regimen today, but it's no less rigorous. My day begins early with an electrolyte protein shake, followed by a 60-90 minute cardio session, followed by a 3-minute cold plunge, and finally my morning high carb and high protein smoothie. Post a demanding day at work, I hit the park for a weight vest walk with our family dog, Rye. Then, it's off to the "pain cave," our basement gym, where my two-year-old son and I bond over golf and a strength workout. He's a mini-me, eagerly copying my movements and setting up obstacle courses. The day winds down with a healthy dinner, a relaxing 20-minute sauna, and a breathing session, aiming for a bedtime between 8 and 9 PM. Despite its strictness, this routine molds to accommodate life's unexpected twists.
My life isn't completely disciplined though; I indulge in drinks with friends, savor Friday night pizzas with family, and can't resist the allure of Chipotle. Date nights are about exploring the town with my wife, sampling every espresso martini we find. I relish life's joys. But before and after these indulgences, I'm committed to hydrating, moving, stretching, and eating clean – no exceptions, ensuring I'm always ready to bounce back to my routine.
This lifestyle might seem daunting, but it's attainable with true dedication. It's not just about looking and feeling great; it's about being equipped for life's challenges and enjoying its treats. It demands vision, self-belief, discipline, structure, and relentless grit.
So, take this as food for thought to live BLDR. I’ll know I will.
